Frost vs. Bobrick Grab Bars: Specs Compared

What actually differs between two named-brand grab bars before you commit a model code to a drawing.

Bobrick B-5806 straight grab bar, stainless steel

When a commercial washroom specification names a grab-bar manufacturer, the next step is comparing the actual models — not just the brand names.

Frost and Bobrick both serve the commercial washroom accessories market, and Mira stocks both lines. But two products should only be treated as interchangeable when their dimensions, mounting arrangement, finish and documentation all genuinely match the project requirements.

Here’s how to compare Frost’s 1001-SP series against a comparable Bobrick straight bar, and what to check before a substitution goes on a purchase order.

Both lines are genuinely stocked by Mira. Where a cell says “confirm against the current spec sheet” or “priced on request,” that’s because the figure isn’t published in our catalogue data yet — ask us and we’ll get it from the manufacturer directly rather than guess.

What actually differs between grab bars

Length and geometry. Start with the dimensions on the project drawings. Specified length, bar diameter, flange arrangement and mounting-hole locations all affect whether a product fits the intended installation — a nominally similar bar isn’t a direct swap if its mounting points differ.

Mounting hardware. Review each manufacturer’s installation instructions. Confirm the supplied hardware, substrate requirements and anchoring method — don’t assume two brands use identical mounting arrangements.

Load rating and supporting evidence. Don’t select a bar on diameter alone. Check the manufacturer’s published load rating and the test basis behind it before treating two figures from different manufacturers as directly comparable.

Finish consistency across the project. Stainless can vary in grade and surface treatment between manufacturers. For projects specifying multiple accessories, compare the exact finish names across the full range — not just the grab bars.

Total procurement cost. Unit price is one part of the comparison. Factor in the quantity needed, supplied hardware, and delivery terms before deciding a cheaper bar is actually the better buy.

Selecting an alternative

  1. Record the specified manufacturer and model number.
  2. Confirm the required length, diameter, material and finish.
  3. Compare the manufacturer’s dimensional drawings and mounting details.
  4. Verify the applicable load documentation and installation requirements.
  5. Confirm the alternative satisfies the project spec and gets any required approval.
  6. Update the product schedule only once that approval is in hand.
